Too many students live on junk food and yet expect maximum performance. “It might sound overstated that certain foods can help your brain work better until you realise that they contain nutrients that provide the building blocks of neurotransmitters, increase blood flow to the brain, stimulate the formation of new brain cells, repair existing brain cells, form the structural components of brain cells and protect brain cells from damage and aging,” said Aashima Chopra, dietician, Paras Hospitals while highlighting the importance of shifting to healthy diet, especially during exam days.Talking about the importance of eating healthy during exams, Sonia Gandhi, HoD, clinical nutrition, Fortis Hospital, Mohali said, “As the stress levels during exam time is high, it induces consumption of high calorie-low nutrient foods(HCLN). Chronic stress in exams increases consumption of unhealthy foods leading to weight gain and obesity.”

Quoting a study, she said, “It is said that regular breakfast consumption, higher consumption of fruits and vegetables, certain micronutrient including folate, iron can help increase performance.”
Keeping this in mind, CBSE had also launched a booklet on stress a few years ago, which is available on their website. The book mentions the right diet which is to be given to the children during exam time. Under the Healthy Lifestyle section, there are ways on how students can maintain a balanced diet. The book states that students should avoid drinks which contain caffeine as it lessens the grasping process instead they should go for health drink fortified with micronutrients and vitamins.
The booklet further states that “appropriate fortified beverages consumption rich in fiber and micronutrients like vitamins and minerals help in giving students that extra edge while preparing for their examinations as they help to improve concentration. Foods rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals should be included in the diet. Ideally, whole grain cereals such as oatmeal containing soluble fiber and beta-glucan, pulses, nuts, milk and milk products, fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables should be included in a day’s diet."
